What is the required dress code for Anuradhapura's sacred sites? ▾

Visitors must wear white or light-coloured clothing that fully covers both shoulders and knees. Hats, caps, and shoes must be removed before stepping onto the sacred sand or stone courtyards (Salapatala Maluwa). Thin socks are permitted and highly recommended during sunny afternoons to protect feet from heated stones.

Can we visit during Full Moon Poya Days? ▾

Yes, Full Moon Poya Days (especially Poson Poya in June and Vesak Poya in May) are the most spiritually vibrant times to visit. Tens of thousands of devotees dressed in pristine white gather with oil lamps, lotus flowers, and incense. Is photography allowed inside the stupas and monastic complexes? ▾

Photography is permitted at almost all outdoor monuments including Ruwanweli Seya, Jetavanaramaya, and Twin Ponds. However, you must NEVER pose with your back turned directly to a Buddha statue for selfies, as this is illegal and culturally offensive. Flash photography is prohibited inside ancient relic chambers and museums.
